Northern Lawyers Demand Governor Revoke Sanusi's Reinstatement Within 48 Hours

A group of lawyers from Northern Nigeria, under the banner of the Northern Lawyers’ Forum, has given Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf a 48-hour ultimatum to reverse his decision to reinstate Emir Muhammad Sanusi II.

At a briefing on Tuesday in Abuja, the forum's Director General, Barr. Umar Sadiq Abubakar, described the reinstatement as "unconstitutional" and "contrary to the traditions and customs of the Kano Emirate."

Abubakar asserted that Sanusi's initial removal was consistent with the laws and traditions of the Emirate and that his reinstatement would "create chaos and undermine the rule of law" in the state. He accused Governor Yusuf of defying a Federal High Court ruling that restrained him from reinstating Sanusi, thereby mocking the judiciary.

Abubakar further criticized Yusuf for relying on an injunction from the Kano State High Court to vacate the subsisting Federal High Court order, calling it a "clear affront" to the Federal High Court's authority and a dangerous precedent undermining the country's judicial hierarchy.

The group warned that they would take "all necessary legal steps" to protect the judiciary and the interests of the people of Kano State if the governor did not comply with their demands.

The forum’s statement read in part: "It has become pertinent to address you on the executive rascality and gross disregard of the judiciary by the executive governor of Kano state, H.E Abba K. Yusuf. Prior to the reinstatement of deposed Muhammad Sanusi II as Emir of Kano, a Federal High Court granted an order restraining the governor and all parties concerned from reinstating Sanusi. However, the governor, in breach of this order, proceeded with the reinstatement.

"As an organization of young lawyers dedicated to an independent and free judiciary, we are perturbed by a sitting governor flagrantly disregarding a valid court order and engaging in actions that desecrate the hallowed temple of justice. We will not allow this to happen unchallenged. The principle of constitutionalism is clear: no one is above the law, and the governor of Kano state is not an exception."
