By Ibrahim Muhammad

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his commitment to settling the outstanding entitlements of former councillors, some of which date back to 2014.

This assurance was made during an event where former councillors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) joined the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) through the Maslaha Forum.

Governor Yusuf commended the councillors for their decision to change allegiances, citing dissatisfaction with the previous administration's neglect in paying their entitlements.

He assured them that their entitlements will soon be paid, justifying their decision to join the NNPP.

A committee has been formed to oversee the payment process, which will follow a method similar to that used for pensioners ¹. Additionally, Governor Yusuf directed the newly appointed chairpersons of Kano's 44 local governments to identify all former councillors who have yet to receive their benefits.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that the NNPP prioritizes the welfare of the people, contrasting this approach with the previous government's indifference to the councillors' struggles.

This move is seen as a significant step towards addressing the long-standing issue of unpaid entitlements.

Many former councillors who served between 2015 and 2023 decided to join the NNPP due to Governor Yusuf's dedication to their welfare.

According to Hon. Sunusi Kata Madobi, chairman of the Maslaha Forum, these former councillors had repeatedly requested their benefits but were disregarded by the previous administration.

Governor Yusuf's commitment to paying outstanding benefits is consistent with his administration's focus on reforms.

He has pledged to reform the civil service and ensure prompt payment of salaries and pensions to workers.

In a related development, Governor Yusuf has also inaugurated the settlement of death benefits and gratuity for pensioners.

This move demonstrates his administration's commitment to addressing the welfare of vulnerable groups in Kano State.
