The Kano State Government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced plans to prosecute individuals and businesses that default on tax payments in 2025.

This move is part of the government's efforts to reform tax administration and improve revenue generation.

According to a statement released by the Governor's spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), Dr. Zaid Abubakar, made the announcement during a presentation at the ongoing High-Level Retreat for top government officials.

Dr. Abubakar emphasized that the reform aims to enhance tax collection efficiency and compliance with tax regulations, rather than increasing tax rates.

The state government projects revenue generation of over ₦20 billion per quarter in 2025.

This development follows the Governor's decision to restructure the Kano State Internal Revenue Service, which has resulted in significant performance improvements in the third and fourth quarters of 2024.

To further boost revenue generation, the Governor will introduce a new tax collection model, expected to substantially increase revenue for the 2025 fiscal year.
