Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the release of an additional ₦6 billion for the payment of retirement benefits, including gratuities and death benefits, to retired civil servants and families of deceased workers.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Ibrahim Adam, the Special Adviser on Information in the governor’s media team, through a post on his verified Facebook page, confirmed by Kano Times.

“This is in addition to the ₦21 billion already settled by His Excellency in gratuity and death benefit liabilities inherited from the previous administration of Ganduje between 2016 and 2023,” Ibrahim wrote.

He added that the new release is the fourth batch of such payments since Governor Yusuf took office in 2023.

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains committed to addressing the suffering of retirees who served the state diligently but were abandoned by the previous government,” he said.

According to the statement, the total unpaid liability stood at ₦48.6 billion. With the latest release, the current administration has paid ₦27 billion so far.

Pensioners and families of deceased civil servants have repeatedly complained of being neglected for years, with many saying they fell into poverty after leaving service.

The Kano State Government has not yet provided a breakdown of how many people will benefit from this fourth batch. However, sources within the pension board told Kano Times that payments are expected to begin this week
