It is with profound sorrow that I pen this tribute to the passing of Professor Dan O. Chukwu, a distinguished historian, esteemed lecturer, and revered mentor, who left us on Monday, 24 November 2025. For decades, Professor Chukwu served with unwavering dedication at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria, leaving an indelible mark on the academic community.

As a renowned historian, Professor Chukwu's contributions to the field of history and international studies are immeasurable. His groundbreaking research, insightful publications, and thought-provoking lectures inspired countless students and colleagues, shaping the intellectual landscape of the Banking sector in West Africa and beyond. His work continues to influence the way we understand the complexities of Nigerian history, politics, and culture.

Professor Chukwu's academic credentials are impressive, with a long list of publications, including books, journal articles, and book chapters. His research interests spanned various areas, including Nigerian history, international relations, and political thoughts. He was a prolific writer, and his work has been widely cited and referenced by scholars and researchers.

Beyond his academic achievements, Professor Chukwu was a dedicated mentor and teacher. He was known for his passion, patience, and generosity with knowledge. He mentored generations of students, many of whom have gone on to become prominent scholars, leaders, and professionals in their own right. His dedication to teaching, research, and community service has created a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future scholars.

Professor Chukwu's impact on Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and historical scholarship is profound. He served as a role model and inspiration to many, and his contributions to the Department of History and International Studies will be remembered for years to come. He was a respected colleague, a devoted educator, and a kind soul who will be deeply missed.

As a fellow historian and mentee, I had the privilege of working with Professor Chukwu as my PhD supervisor. His expertise, guidance, and encouragement were invaluable, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have learned from him.

I recall with fond memories, each time he called to check on me and the family, he would say, "G. O. D. how far?" I will forever miss that fond name and kind words. His phone calls were always a source of encouragement and motivation, and I will cherish the memories of our conversations. I will equally be missing the daily devotional he always sent, to ensure my good spiritual health.

Professor Chukwu's membership in esteemed organizations, including Fellow of the Historical Society of Nigeria (FHSN) and Fellow of the Institute of Disaster Management and Safety Science, Nigeria (FDMSS), is a testament to his expertise and commitment to academic and community service excellence. He had served as Vice President, South East Zone of HSN, and a Council member.

As we mourn the passing of Professor Chukwu, we take solace in the knowledge that his life and work will continue to inspire us to strive for excellence, to cherish the pursuit of knowledge, and to serve humanity with compassion and integrity. His legacy will live on, and his contributions to Nigerian academia will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Professor Chukwu. We shall not weep, but celebrate your life, your legacy, and your enduring impact on our academic community.
