The Nigerian Library Association (NLA) has appealed to the government to ensure libraries are managed according to the law, emphasizing that library management is a shared responsibility among federal, state, and local governments. Dr. Lawan Umar, NLA National President, made this call during the association's Kano State chapter annual meeting, held at Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University.
Dr. Umar stressed that libraries need proper equipment and qualified staff to create a conducive learning environment, saying, "The current state of many libraries is not good, and it's not an atmosphere for reading." He emphasized the importance of reading and library development, from primary schools to universities, for Nigeria's future, stating, "It depends on reading, and it's necessary to look at the reading in the books in the libraries."
The association is working to revitalize libraries through technology and innovation, with the Kano State chapter organizing workshops and training for members. Malam Nazir Muhammad, Chairman of NLA Kano State, highlighted the chapter's efforts, including producing an online magazine to promote research and publication. He explained that the magazine aims to encourage members to conduct research and submit articles for publication, which is a requirement for promotion.
Malam Nazir Muhammad also outlined the challenges facing the association, including low member participation and inadequate government support. He appealed to members to be more united and to participate in the association's activities, saying, "There is a need for the members of the association to be more united."
Hajiya Mabruka Abubakar Abba, Librarian of Sa'adatu Rimi College of Education, commended the conference and urged librarians to work together to develop the association. She noted that the Kano State Government, led by Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has renovated some libraries and equipped them with modern communication equipment.
The NLA is calling on the government to provide further support to improve library infrastructure and services, particularly in local government areas. The association's efforts aim to ensure that libraries provide a conducive environment for learning and contribute to Nigeria's development.
