SOKOTO – The Governorship Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’iya (Walin Sokoto), has pledged to rebuild the state civil service through merit-based reforms, professionalism and improved staff welfare if elected governor in the 2027 general elections.
Dan’iya made the pledge while receiving a delegation of civil servants, including administrative officers, finance officers and local government personnel, who paid him a Sallah homage and expressed support for his governorship ambition.
Addressing the delegation, the ADC candidate described the civil service as the backbone of government, stressing that effective governance depends on a motivated, efficient and professional workforce.
He said governments achieve sustainable development only when public servants are treated fairly, motivated and allowed to perform their duties without discrimination.
Dan’iya expressed concern over reports that some civil servants and local government employees had allegedly suffered career setbacks because of their association with previous administrations, insisting that promotions and career progression should be based on competence, professionalism and the rule of law rather than political considerations.
According to him, civil servants serve the state and not political parties, adding that any administration committed to development must uphold meritocracy and reward experience and excellence.
The governorship candidate also called for greater attention to the socio-economic challenges facing Sokoto State, particularly poverty, unemployment, education, healthcare and rural development.
Citing findings from the National Multidimensional Poverty Index (NMPI), Dan’iya noted that Sokoto State recorded the highest multidimensional poverty rate in Nigeria at 90.5 per cent, arguing that the situation demands urgent government intervention.
He explained that multidimensional poverty extends beyond low income to include poor access to education, healthcare, nutrition, housing, electricity, sanitation and clean water.
Dan’iya said his administration would focus on lifting people out of poverty by creating opportunities, improving living standards and implementing policies that directly benefit ordinary citizens.
He further promised comprehensive reforms in the public sector, including institutional strengthening, capacity building, workforce development, prompt payment of workers' entitlements and the adoption of technology-driven systems to improve efficiency.
The ADC candidate assured civil servants that, under his administration, the Sokoto State Civil Service would become merit-based, professional and capable of competing with the best public service institutions across Nigeria.
Earlier, speaking on behalf of the delegation, senior civil servant Malam Muhammad Gumbi congratulated Dan’iya on the Eid-el-Kabir celebration and commended his continued engagement with public servants.
Gumbi said the visit was also intended to reaffirm the delegation's support for the ADC and its vision of an inclusive, accountable and development-oriented government in Sokoto State.
The visit was attended by the ADC State Chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Maigwandu, alongside members of the party's state executive committee.
