The Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commissioned the Quick Response Squad of the Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, alongside operational equipment worth hundreds of millions of naira, to intensify the war against drug abuse, thuggery and illicit trafficking in the state.
The development was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary, Media and Publicity Committee of the Task Force, Lamara Garba, mnipr, and made available to newsmen on Thursday.
According to the statement, the commissioning ceremony held on Thursday, November 5, 2026, marked another major milestone in the administration's drive to tackle substance abuse through enforcement, rapid response, rehabilitation, skills acquisition and reintegration.
Garba said Governor Yusuf, while speaking at the event, expressed delight over the progress being made in the fight against drug abuse, noting that sustained efforts by the government and partner agencies were yielding positive results.
"I am the happiest man in Kano today as we continue to push drug abuse down to the barest minimum," the Governor was quoted as saying.
The Governor said the newly commissioned Quick Response Squad will boost the Task Force's capacity to respond promptly to reports and emerging threats relating to substance abuse.
He described the procurement of the modern equipment as part of his administration's commitment to equipping relevant agencies with the necessary tools to confront the drug menace.
Garba added that Governor Yusuf stressed that the fight should not end with arrest and prosecution, but must include rehabilitation and empowerment of affected persons through skills acquisition and legitimate economic activities to prevent relapse.
The Governor, accompanied by the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismaila Falgore, and other top government officials, inspected the newly commissioned facility and equipment and expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness.
In the statement, the Chairman of the Task Force, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, reaffirmed the Task Force's commitment to sustaining the onslaught against substance abuse.
Rimin Gado, according to Garba, said the Quick Response Squad and modern equipment would significantly strengthen swift and effective response to drug-related challenges and protect communities from its devastating consequences.
He thanked Governor Yusuf for his political will and strong support, which had given the Task Force confidence and operational backing to carry out its mandate without fear or favour, and pledged to deepen collaboration and sustain preventive, enforcement, rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
