The Edo Community in Kano on Friday turbaned Alhaji Kadiri Mohammed as the new “Oshiozoya 1” in a colorful ceremony that drew members of the community and well-wishers from across the state.
The title, conferred by Deacon Fred Adezele Akhigbe, the Onogie II, Sarki Edo Kano, means “Someone Chosen by God.”
Speaking with journalists during the event, Oshiozoya 1, Kadiri Mohammed, said he was excited by the opportunity given to him by the community and assured that he would do his best to protect the interests of the people and uphold the dignity of the title.
“I am very grateful to my community in Kano for finding me worthy to bear this title in the council of chiefs of the Edo community in Kano,” he said.
“As one of my friends usually says, if you are hardworking, the only commendation you get is more work. We will continue to do our best to ensure we deliver to our people under this assignment.”
He described the gathering as a family get-together that later became a global celebration.
“I am very happy with everyone that attended this event. I really appreciate and thank all those who came to celebrate with me. I wish them safe journeys to their destinations,” he added.
He also extended greetings to the Kano Emirate through the Sarki Edo Kano.
The Chairman of ICAN Kano State Chapter, Jamilu Abdullahi Daihur, who attended the ceremony, said members of the institute were proud that one of their own had been honored with a chieftaincy title.
“We are happy with this occasion because one of our ICAN members has been turbaned,” Daihur said. “We will make efforts to ensure he delivers on all the responsibilities placed on his shoulders because he is a man who is always assisting his people and those living with them.”
A senior brother of the celebrant, Kadiri Aminu, said the council of chiefs decided to honor him because of his dedication to serving the people, his efforts in uniting communities, and his peaceful disposition.
“We are quite sure what brought him this opportunity is his efforts in uniting people and maintaining good relationships. He is also one of the leaders of a professional body, ICAN, that consists of people from various businesses,” Aminu said.
Also speaking, Dr. Asiya Balarabe Umar Ganduje described Alhaji Kadiri Mohammed as a good leader in society. “He is one of the leaders of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and also a leader in his Edo community in Kano. The number of people that participated in this event is clear testimony that he is a good person in the society as we know him,” she said.
Among those present at the event were renowned politician and former local government chairman in Edo State, and proprietor of private schools in Kano State, Imonofe Yunusa.
The ceremony ended with prayers for peace, unity, and progress of the Edo community in Kano and Nigeria at large.
