The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, is seeking to collaborate with the Private Health Institutions Management Agency (PHIMA) of Kano State to strengthen the regulation of private health institutions.

The move is aimed at understudying PHIMA's operational framework and exploring strategies for effective regulation and monitoring of private health facilities.

This was disclosed when a delegation from the FCT paid a courtesy visit to PHIMA headquarters in Kano.

The delegation said the visit was to learn about the agency's operations, regulatory procedures, and how it develops and reviews standards guiding private healthcare facilities.

Welcoming the delegation, the Acting Director-General of PHIMA, Hajiya Khadija Sa’id, expressed the agency’s readiness to share its experiences, operational practices and regulatory strategies with sister agencies.

She emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration, knowledge sharing and institutional partnerships in strengthening regulation and improving healthcare service delivery.

Hajiya Khadija also highlighted the need to strengthen PHIMA’s internal structures and ensure effective coordination among its departments and units, noting that departments such as Internal Audit, Public Relations, and Legal Services play critical roles in promoting accountability, transparency, compliance and efficient service delivery.

She expressed optimism that the engagement would foster stronger cooperation between PHIMA and the FCT health regulatory authorities, allowing both institutions to exchange ideas and adopt best practices.

During the engagement, Dr. Rukayya Wamakko of the FCT delegation sought clarification on how PHIMA develops and reviews standards for private health institutions to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and quality standards.

Responding, Dr. Sulaiman Ibrahim explained that PHIMA was established in 2017, while its operational guidelines were developed in 2024 to strengthen its regulatory framework.

He stressed the importance of clear operational guidelines and effective regulatory mechanisms to ensure that private health facilities comply with prescribed standards and deliver quality services to the public.

Discussions at the meeting also focused on PHIMA’s operational structure, financial sustainability, revenue generation, internal control mechanisms and the roles of relevant departments in promoting accountability and effective service delivery.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Agency, *Fauziyya Habib Mahmud.*

The statement noted that the visit underscores the importance of inter-agency collaboration and knowledge sharing among health regulatory institutions in Nigeria, which is essential for strengthening regulatory systems and promoting quality healthcare delivery across the country.
