Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has expressed deep sadness over the death of Mallam Nafiu Baba-Ahmed, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria.

Governor Yusuf, in a condolence message issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa on Tuesday, 6th October, 2026, described the late Baba-Ahmed's passing as a great loss to the Muslim Ummah, the nation and humanity.

According to the Governor, Nigeria has been deprived of a distinguished lawyer, financial expert, Islamic affairs advocate and respected public intellectual who devoted decades of his life to the promotion of justice, good governance and religious understanding.

He acknowledged his longstanding and committed leadership as Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, where he remained a strong voice on matters concerning Islam, constitutional rights, justice and national development.

Governor Yusuf also commended the deceased's remarkable career in the legal and financial sectors, including his service at the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) and his pioneering contributions to the development of Islamic finance in Nigeria.

"He would be remembered for his courage, intellectual depth, humility and tireless commitment to the values of justice, fairness and service to humanity," the Governor said.

On behalf of the Government and people of Kano State, Governor Yusuf extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Mallam Nafiu Baba-Ahmed, the leadership and members of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, the people of Kaduna State and the wider Muslim community.

He prayed Allah (SWT) to forgive his shortcomings, reward his good deeds abundantly and grant him Aljannatul Firdausi, while granting his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
