From Hadi Bawa

Hoodlums wreaked havoc in Gwagwa town, FCT, by breaking into a government warehouse and plundering stored food items. The incident occurred early Sunday morning, with residents witnessing youths raiding the facility, carting away bags of maize and grain.

The looting persisted for hours, attracting more individuals from neighboring areas like Jiwa and Karmo, causing traffic congestion on the Gwagwa-Karmo road. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos, with some sustaining injuries in the frenzy.

Among those affected was Jaafar Aminu, who described the situation as alarming, noting the absence of security presence to contain the unruly mob. Christopher Agbo echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how the looters even dismantled barricades to access the warehouse.

This isn't the first time such an incident has occurred; during the Covid-19 lockdown, the same warehouse fell victim to looting, resulting in the loss of essential supplies and equipment.

After ransacking the government store, the hoodlums redirected their attention towards Idu Industrial Estate, targeting both private and government-owned warehouses.

Despite the escalating crisis, there was a notable absence of security forces to deter further damage.

However, FCT police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, assured efforts were underway to regain control of the situation, although details on their intervention remained sparse at the time of reporting.

The incident underscores the challenges of safeguarding public assets and the need for swift and effective response mechanisms to prevent such occurrences in the future.
