The Renewable and Alternative Energy Society of Nigeria (RAESON) has confered the Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University, Prof. Bashir Garba, MFR, alongside 3 others with a prestigious fellowship award.

 The spoke person of the University Zayyanu Shehu explained that their investiture  took place on Monday, June 3, 2024, at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano state, during the 12th Annual International Conference of the Society, with a theme: Green Energy for Socio-economic and Environmental  Sustainablility.

The National President of RAESON, Prof. Chidi E. Akujor, FAS, presented the award to Prof. Garba, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of renewable energy. Prof. Garba's dedication to promoting sustainable energy solutions and protecting the environment was highlighted, particularly, during his tenure as Director of the Energy Research Centre, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and Director, Energy Management, Training and Manpower Development, at Energy Commission of Nigeria, Abuja.

He described Prof. Garba as a champion of renewable energy, who is  working tirelessly to address global warming and environmental sustainability challenges. Prof. Akujor urged the awardees to see honour as a call to greater service to the Society, in paticular, and humanity, as a whole.

Prof. Garba, a renowned Professor of Applied Chemistry with expertise in Renewable Energy (biomass, biofuels, solar), expressed gratitude to RAESON for the honour. He reaffirmed his commitment to the Society and the pursuit of sustainable green energy solutions.

 This fellowship award adds to his impressive list of seven fellowships from various professional bodies and membership of several others.

Earlier speaking, Prof. Garba, who also served as representative of  the Chairman of the Occasion, Prof. A.S. Sambo, FAS, described green energy, also known as renewable energy as an energy that is derived from natural resources that are replenished at higher rate than they are consumed. Such natural resources include sunlight and wind that are constantly being replenished. 

He further stressed the need for policmakers, scholars and practioners to come together to harness green energy (renewable energy), which according to him, is  the key driver of Socio-economic  development, energy security and sustainable environment. 

The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied to the epoch-making ceremony by the  Bursar of the University, Alh. Muhammad Sahabi Tambuwal, and the Principal Assistant Registrar, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Mal. Muhammad Musa.
