The Kano State Government has made a startling accusation against the police, alleging that they are attempting to disrupt the annual National Tijjaniyya Maulud, a revered religious event that has taken place for 39 years without incident.
This accusation was made by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during a press briefing at the Emir's Palace on Friday evening.
Waiya dismissed the police's earlier warning about suspected terrorists planning to attack public gatherings in key locations across the state.
He criticized the police for blocking the venue of the religious gathering, describing the action as unnecessary and unjustified.
According to Waiya, Kano State has no evidence of any security threat that would warrant such measures.
The commissioner emphasized Kano State's commitment to upholding and supporting activities that promote peace, unity, and spiritual growth.
He reassured the public that the Maulud would proceed as planned at Kofar Mata Stadium, urging attendees not to be deterred. Waiya stated that the National Tijjaniyya Maulud is organized by a legitimately registered and recognized body, and any attempt to obstruct it would be a violation of citizens' rights to lawful assembly and religious practice in Nigeria.
Waiya also called on the Federal Government to withdraw its security agencies from the venue, emphasizing that Kofar Mata Stadium is a property of the Kano State Government.
He declared that there is no justification for any external force to obstruct a legitimate religious gathering, adding that Kano State has always been a beacon of peace and religious tolerance.
The police had earlier claimed to have received intelligence reports about suspected terrorists planning to attack public gatherings in key locations across the state.
However, Waiya's accusations suggest that the police's actions may be motivated by other factors. The situation remains tense, with many wondering what will happen next.
As the National Tijjaniyya Maulud proceeds, many are watching to see how the situation will unfold. Will the police withdraw their security agencies, or will the event be disrupted? One thing is certain - the people of Kano State will not be silenced, and they will continue to demand their right to peaceful assembly and religious practice.
