.Urges Recruitment of Veterinary Doctors to Sustain Progress

By Adamu Abubakar Kumo

The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Gombe State Chapter, has commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his transformative strides in the livestock sector. The association lauded the Governor’s commitment to revamping veterinary infrastructure, implementing effective policies, and spearheading projects that have revitalized the sector.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the GOMBE STATE L-PRES Project Office, NVMA Chairman, Dr. Adamu Hamma Boyi, praised the Governor's leadership for addressing the long-standing neglect of the livestock subsector.

Dr. Boyi highlighted significant milestones under Governor Yahaya’s administration, including the renovation of the Tashan Dukku veterinary clinic, now equipped with a state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory. "This is a game-changer for veterinarians, enabling safer animal product testing and better public health outcomes," he said.

Achievements in the Livestock Sector

Dr. Boyi cited numerous achievements, such as: Modernized Abattoirs: Renovations of abattoirs in Gombe, Kumo, and Bajoga to improve hygiene and efficiency.

Farmer Field Schools: Upgrades to enhance livestock husbandry practices.

International Livestock Market: Establishment of a groundbreaking 30-hectare livestock market with an ultramodern abattoir and veterinary hospital.

He emphasized the economic and public health benefits of these developments, stating, “This facility will create jobs, improve public health, boost internally generated revenue, and promote economic growth.”

Annual Vaccination Campaigns

Dr. Boyi lauded the administration’s annual vaccination drives, including the recent campaign vaccinating over 3 million animals against diseases such as anthrax, PPR, and CBPP. He noted that these efforts have made Gombe a model for livestock health in Nigeria.

Appeal for Recruitment of Veterinary Doctors

While commending the progress made, Dr. Boyi stressed the need for more human resources to sustain the momentum. "The recruitment and training of veterinary professionals are crucial to maintaining the infrastructure and ensuring the success of ongoing initiatives," he urged.

He further praised the ongoing work at the Wawa-Zange grazing reserve and the remapping of grazing lands, describing these as benchmarks for livestock development nationwide.

Dr. Boyi reaffirmed the NVMA's full support for Governor Yahaya’s policies and expressed confidence that these investments would position Gombe State as a leader in livestock development, serving as a model for other states.
