A Northern youth group affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai for allegedly making disparaging comments about the North and APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The group's national coordinator, Hon. Musa Mujahid Zaitawa, expressed disappointment over El-Rufai's statement, which claimed there are no good elders in the North.
Zaitawa pointed out notable figures such as former Presidents Ibrahim Babangida and Abdussalamu Abubakar, as well as prominent businessmen Aliko Dangote and Aminu Dantata, as evidence that El-Rufai's comments were unfounded.
He described El-Rufai's remarks as shameful and accused him of being a "political trader" who prioritizes his selfish interests over the welfare of Northerners.
The group's criticism of El-Rufai stems from his recent actions, including his resignation from the APC and joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in March 2025.
El-Rufai cited irreconcilable differences with the APC leadership as the reason for his departure. This move was seen as a strategic step ahead of the 2027 elections.
The youth group warned El-Rufai not to underestimate Ganduje's influence and vowed to challenge him, especially since he's currently seeking support in Kaduna, Katsina, and Jigawa. Zaitawa reaffirmed the group's commitment to supporting the APC leadership and defending the North's interests.
The development highlights the growing tensions within the APC, particularly with El-Rufai's recent defection to the SDP. The party's leadership will likely face increased scrutiny as the 2027 elections draw near.
The group's reaction underscores the importance of careful communication in politics, where words can have far-reaching consequences. El-Rufai's comments have sparked controversy, and the outcome of this standoff remains to be seen.
