The Kano State Government has commenced payment of over ₦16 billion in outstanding gratuities and allowances to former councillors and current political office holders across the 44 local government councils in the state.

The payments cover gratuity, accommodation, leave/recess, housing, and furniture allowances applicable to councillors who served between 2014 and 2024, as well as current elected and appointed officials.

At a ceremony in Kano, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the payments were based on fairness and a show of appreciation for the service rendered to the state.

He emphasized that the payment of gratuities to former councillors is not a privilege but a right, and a demonstration of the administration's commitment to upholding dignity, fairness, and accountability in public service.

The Governor noted that the decision to pay the outstanding gratuities and allowances was supported by members of the State Executive Council, regardless of the political backgrounds of the beneficiaries.

He stated that it is not right to deny people their rights, especially after serving their people diligently.

The payment will be made in three tranches, covering different periods and beneficiaries. A total of ₦1.8 billion will be paid to 903 beneficiaries who served between 2014 and 2017, while ₦5.6 billion and ₦8.2 billion will be paid to 1,198 and 1,371 beneficiaries who served between 2018-2020 and 2021-2024, respectively.

Additionally, ₦1.27 billion is being disbursed for housing and furniture allowances for current local government political office holders.

The Governor emphasized that these payments are more than just financial transactions, but an expression of the administration's values of respecting service, honouring commitments, and being accountable.

The Governor acknowledged the roles played by various stakeholders in the payment process and urged them to work together to build a more prosperous and inclusive Kano State.

With pride in their collective effort and confidence in their shared future, he launched the first phase of the payments.
