Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has signed two bills into law at the 28th Executive Council Meeting on May 19, 2025. The bills aim to facilitate the execution of a gigantic irrigation project in the state.
The first law, the Water Users Association Established Law, 2025, empowers the government to operate, maintain, and construct irrigation projects.
The second law, an amendment to the WRECA Law, allows the state government to appoint a Deputy Managing Director. According to the Commissioner of Water Resources, Hon. Haruna Doguwa, the Water Users Association Law will enable the government to access funds for the construction of the irrigation project at Jakara Dam, valued at N16 billion.
The project, which will benefit thousands of farmers in Minjibir, Gabasawa, Gezawa, and other areas, is expected to create wealth, job opportunities, and increase farm produce in the state. The government plans to open an account and deposit N5 billion to pay farmers for off-season farming.
The Jakara Dam irrigation project will cover 1,500 hectares, providing a significant boost to agricultural production in the state. The project is a testament to the government's commitment to improving the lives of its citizens and promoting economic growth.
The signing of these bills into law marks a significant milestone in the state's agricultural development.
The project is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of farmers and the broader community.
With the passage of these laws, the Kano State government is poised to take a significant step towards achieving its agricultural goals and improving the livelihoods of its citizens.
