The Kano State Government has released ₦5 billion as the fifth tranche of gratuities and death benefits for retired civil servants and families of deceased workers.
In a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the payment was announced during an event held at the Government House, Kano, where the governor personally supervised the exercise.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the latest disbursement has now brought the total payments to ₦27 billion out of the ₦48 billion backlog of liabilities inherited from previous administrations.
He explained that the initiative was part of his administration’s resolve to restore dignity and justice to workers who dedicated their lives to the service of the state.
The governor assured that his government would continue to make regular settlements until the entire balance was cleared.
Labour leaders and pensioners’ representatives present at the event described the intervention as a lifeline, stressing that many retirees had endured years of hardship before finally receiving their entitlements.
