I recently read an article in the influential New York Times titled "Venezuela – Russian Weapons Fail," which examined how United States military forces stormed Caracas, Venezuela, on 3 January 2026. They successfully compromised and neutralized Venezuela’s air defense system and captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, almost without resistance.

This occurred despite the existence of a military pact between Venezuela and Russia, and despite the installation of sophisticated Russian air defense systems in Venezuela, which failed disastrously, leaving the nation’s airspace exposed to American incursion.

This episode reinforces my enduring suspicion and circumspection regarding the sincerity of purpose and actions of these so-called superpowers. Time and again, they demonstrate a willingness to sacrifice weaker nations in pursuit of their broader strategic interests, treating them as pawns in the chessboard of global self-preservation.

Such patterns are not new; they date back to the Cold War era between the Soviet Union and the West. Any nation that relies solely on the support of these superpowers for its survival does so at its own peril.
