Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has nominated Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor and forwarded his name to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.
The nomination was announced Tuesday in a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad. It follows the voluntary resignation of former Deputy Governor Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026.
Citing Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, Muhammad said the governor is empowered to nominate a deputy when a vacancy exists. He added that the nomination came after wide consultations with key stakeholders.
Garo, 48, is a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of experience in both elective and appointed roles. He previously served as State Organising Secretary of his party and Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor.
He was also elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government, served as Chairman of ALGON Kano, and later as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. In 2023, he was the APC Deputy Governorship Candidate.
The Governor said Garo’s nomination is part of efforts to strengthen governance and sustain effective service delivery in Kano State.
The State House of Assembly is expected to screen and confirm the nominee in the coming days.
