Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the regulation of sand mining activities around water treatment plants across the state in a move to protect critical water infrastructure.

The directive was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, following an inspection visit to the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant.

According to the statement, the governor gave the order to the Ministry of Water Resources as part of efforts to safeguard water facilities and prevent disruptions in the production and supply of potable water to residents.

Yusuf warned that unchecked sand mining poses a serious threat to the effective functioning of water treatment plants, noting that it could undermine government investments aimed at ensuring sustainable access to clean water.

He stressed the need for strict monitoring and enforcement of regulations to ensure that mining activities do not compromise water sources and treatment processes.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving water supply across the state, urging stakeholders to cooperate with the government in protecting public utilities.

The move, according to the statement, is part of proactive measures to secure Kano’s water infrastructure and guarantee continuous access to safe drinking water.
