Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Friday laid the foundation for a “giant secondary school” in Kaura Goge, Nasarawa Local Government Area, in a move to replace the dilapidated Maikwatashi school.
The Maikwatashi school, once famous in the area, had fallen into disrepair, suffered encroachment, and had parts of its land fraudulently sold off by unscrupulous individuals. Governor Yusuf said the situation forced his administration to intervene with a promise to build a new school for the community.
According to a press release signed by Mustapha Muhammad, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, ownership of the old Maikwatashi school has now been transferred to the Kano State Colleges of Arts and Islamic Studies, CAS, to ensure the site continues to serve educational purposes.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony, Governor Yusuf said: “There are a huge number of students in this area that had to go to Sabon Gari for schooling. That’s why we want to build a school here.”
He urged residents to cooperate with the contractor handling the project and warned the contractor to deliver quality work.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Goni Ali Haruna Makoda, described the project as “promise made, promise kept” by Governor Yusuf. He confirmed that the project will cost N1.3 billion.
The new school is expected to ease the burden on students and parents in Kaura Goge and surrounding communities once completed.
