Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has restated his administration’s commitment to building an efficient and professional public service that responds to the needs of the people.

Speaking at the 2026 May Day celebration held at Sani Abacha Stadium, the governor said his government would continue to prioritize policies that “promote fairness, reward diligence, and create a conducive working environment for civil servants.”

“We will continue to prioritize policies that promote fairness, reward diligence, and create a conducive working environment for civil servants,” Yusuf said in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.

He described workers as the “engine room of governance and development,” adding that May Day celebrates their resilience, dedication, and sacrifices.

Addressing this year’s theme, _“Insecurity and Poverty: The Bane of Decent Work,”_ the governor said his administration is expanding social interventions to ease the cost of living and enhancing security across communities and economic corridors.

N48bn Pension Backlog Almost Cleared
Governor Yusuf disclosed that over N48 billion in inherited pension and gratuity backlogs have been almost fully cleared. He assured that the remaining N16 billion will be settled before the end of his first tenure.

He added that civil servants have benefited from various capacity-building programmes within and outside the state, while the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, also received government support to organize similar training for its members.

To improve service delivery, the governor said thousands of new workers have been employed to fill existing vacancies and strengthen the state’s workforce. He urged civil servants to reciprocate with renewed dedication, integrity, and commitment to duty.

“Let us work together to build a state where excellence in service delivery becomes the norm, and where every worker takes pride in contributing to the progress of Kano,” he said.

NLC Pledges 100% Support 
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Kano State Chapter, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa, commended the governor for restoring workers’ confidence. 

Comrade Inuwa said the state’s workforce was giving the Yusuf administration “100 percent support” due to its worker-friendly policies.
