The Arewa Youths Merger Group, APC, has reconciled rival thuggery groups, known as "yan daba"in Kano State in a bid to end street violence, phone snatching, drug abuse and robbery in communities across the state.

The reconciliation meeting received support from security agencies, various youth organizations, traditional rulers, and the backing of Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, under the Kano First Agenda.

The National Coordinator of the Arewa Youths Merger Group, Hon. Musa Mujahid Zaitawa, flagged off the distribution of forms to unemployed youths involved in thuggery and drug abuse.

He said the forms will be submitted to the Kano State Government to enable it to support the beneficiaries with vocational training and start-up capital, to help them improve their lives and embrace better livelihoods.

During the event, Hon. Zaitawa also called on Arewa stakeholders and prominent Northern businessmen including Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Abdussamad Isiyaka Rabi’u, A.A. Rano, A.Y. Maikifi, Alhaji Bashir Dankullu, Alhaji Sabiu Bako, Alhaji Bureza, Danlami Alasan, Hamisu Dankaka, Alhaji Yahaya Lawan, and companies such as Mudassir and Brothers, and Garba Karfe Investment, to partner with the group and support the youths.

He described thuggery as a “time bomb” behind the security challenges in Kano State, and said that training the youths and providing them with capital would go a long way in addressing insecurity.

Hon. Zaitawa further called on parents to monitor their children closely in order to end the menace affecting residents of Kano State.

He urged political leaders and politicians in Kano to refrain from using such youths to cause unrest during the 2027 election campaigns.

He also appealed to security agencies and all stakeholders that any of the reconciled youths who renege on their promise to quit thuggery and are rearrested should face the full weight of the law.

The Arewa Youths Merger Group National Coordinator called on the Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammad Sunusi II, to direct district heads, ward heads and village heads to monitor newcomers entering Kano State in order to curb insecurity. He cited the case of a suspected terrorist who claimed he would enter Kano from Katsina to cause trouble.

He said the reconciliation exercise between thuggery groups within Kano would help end clashes, phone snatching, and robbery, and would also prevent the youths from associating with terrorists.

Hon. Zaitawa also called on the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, and the National Security Adviser to deploy more security personnel to Kano State to tackle the threat of bandits moving in from Katsina State.

He noted that Kano State currently enjoys about 99 percent of the security in the Northwest, but said the security challenge has links with the approach of the 2027 general elections.

He urged the Federal Government and defence authorities to take urgent action to end security problems in the North and the country at large.

He expressed optimism that the effort would reach every part of the state to sensitize the public and youths on the dangers of drug abuse and thuggery.
