Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been praised as Nigeria's most labour-friendly governor by the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS).
This recognition is a testament to Governor Yusuf's exceptional commitment to empowering trade unions and fostering harmonious labour relations in the state.
The MINILS recognition was conveyed in a letter of appreciation signed by Dr. Raji Michael, representing the Director General and Chief Executive of MINILS.
The letter highlighted Governor Yusuf's landmark initiative in organizing a capacity-building workshop for union leaders within the Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The workshop, titled "Conflict Management for Harmonious Industrial Labour Relations Environment," equipped union executives with practical conflict resolution strategies to enhance workplace harmony and productivity.
Governor Yusuf's dedication to advancing workers' education and creating responsive, vibrant trade unions in Kano was acknowledged by Dr. Michael.
The workshop participants returned with renewed determination, equipped to implement the conflict management skills they acquired. The institute also seeks additional collaboration with the Kano State Government to advance labour education and development initiatives.
Governor Yusuf's commitment to workers' welfare is further demonstrated by his recent approval of a minimum wage increase to N71,000 for Kano State civil servants, surpassing the federal recommendation.
This move reinforces his administration's focus on improving the lives of workers and their families.
The recognition by MINILS is not an isolated incident. Previously, Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, was also honored by MINILS for his labour-friendly policies, including consistent payment of the minimum wage and respect for freedom of association among workers.
Governor Yusuf's efforts to promote harmonious labour relations and workers' welfare are in line with the National Employment Policy (NEP), which aims to generate employment and improve working conditions in Nigeria.
The MINILS recognition is a well-deserved acknowledgment of Governor Yusuf's unwavering commitment to workers' welfare and labour relations in Kano State.
