Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved a new minimum wage of N71,000 for state civil servants, effective November 2024.
This decision reflects the governor's commitment to social justice, economic growth, and enhanced living standards for state workers and citizens.
According to Governor Yusuf, the implementation of the new minimum wage will increase the state's monthly salary obligations by over N6 billion, with an additional N7 billion needed for the 44 local government councils.
Despite financial constraints, including a low Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of only N2 billion, the governor emphasized the need to reform domestic revenue generation strategies to meet the state's obligations.
In comparison, states like Lagos generate an average of N54.3 billion, Rivers N14.5 billion, Ogun N10.1 billion, and Delta N7.1 billion.
Governor Yusuf encouraged civil servants to enhance service delivery, seek innovative solutions, and foster collaboration to ensure transparency and accountability.
The governor also acknowledged the previous administration's large-scale hiring initiative, which employed 13,000 individuals without due diligence.
However, the present administration formed a committee to review these hires and retained over 12,000 of them in the state civil service.
Governor Yusuf urged civil servants to intensify their dedication to efficiency, productivity, and effectiveness, stressing the need for collective effort to drive transformative change.
The Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, assured that the committee had ensured appropriate implementation of the new wage without difficulties.
Comrades Kabiru Inuwa, representing the civil servants, thanked the governor for approving the minimum wage despite the state having the most populous civil servant workforce in the country.
This move demonstrates Governor Yusuf's commitment to prioritizing the welfare of civil servants.
The N71,000 minimum wage approval is a significant step towards improving the lives of Kano State civil servants and their families.
