Nigeria's Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, has threatened to resign from his position if Abdullahi Abbas is re-elected as the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

This ultimatum comes amidst a deepening crisis within the party, fueled by suspicions of a plot to extend Abbas' tenure as chairman.

The crisis is reportedly linked to a power struggle within the party, with National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje allegedly backing Abbas' re-election to undermine Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau's potential bid for governor in 2027.

Ata reaffirmed his stance during an interview with journalists in Kano, emphasizing that the party's poor leadership and management led to its defeat in the last election.

Ata's decision was made during a ward stakeholders' meeting aimed at repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

He stressed that the party cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past, citing the need for new leadership with integrity. Ata warned that any attempt to reinstate Abbas would be met with resistance.

As the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Ata has been instrumental in developing affordable housing projects in Kano, promoting community planning, and driving urban renewal initiatives.

His experience in urban planning, housing, and education has equipped him to address the complex challenges facing Kano State.

Ata's threat to resign has significant implications for the APC in Kano State, highlighting the deep divisions within the party. The outcome of this power struggle will likely shape the party's prospects in the 2027 elections.

The APC's leadership crisis in Kano State serves as a microcosm of the broader challenges facing the party nationwide.

As the 2027 elections approach, the APC must navigate these internal conflicts to present a united front and maintain its electoral viability.
