Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has emphasized the need for transparency, inclusiveness, and strict adherence to due process in the ongoing review of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.

He made the call while addressing participants at the Kano State Stakeholders’ Dialogue on the 2025 Constitutional Amendment, organized by the state government to foster public input into the constitutional reform process.

The high-level engagement was held on Thursday at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf described the forum as both timely and essential.

“The constitutional amendment process must be open, fair, and reflect the collective will of the people. That is why we are involving a broad range of stakeholders in this dialogue,” the Governor stated.

He further stressed: “The Nigerian Constitution, as the supreme law of the land, must reflect the realities, aspirations, and values of the people it serves. It should work in the best interest of all citizens.”

Governor Yusuf also commended the committee constituted to advise the state government on the constitutional amendment process, applauding the chairman, Professor Auwalu Hamisu Yadudu, for his leadership and expert guidance.

Professor Yadudu, who chairs the Kano State Standing Committee on the Constitutional Amendment, delivered a detailed presentation on the committee’s findings.

He highlighted 40 sections proposed for amendment, identifying critical areas in need of reform and sections that should remain unchanged to safeguard national unity and institutional stability.

In his remarks, His Highness, the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, expressed the full support of traditional institutions for the state government’s position, provided it reflects the will of the people.

Similarly, the National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, endorsed the recommendations of the committee.

He noted that the proposals align with Nigeria’s democratic ideals and long-term developmental goals.

Representatives of civil society organizations, professional associations, youth and women groups, as well as religious and traditional leaders in attendance, also unanimously backed the committee’s recommendations.
