Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has disclosed that his administration inherited a staggering debt and nearly empty government coffers, with only about ₦9,000 left in one of the state's bank accounts.

This revelation was made during the distribution of permanent and pensionable appointment letters to 4,315 former BESDA teachers in Kano.

The governor attributed the state's financial woes to the previous administration's reckless financial practices, including employing over 128 tax consultants without delivering tangible results.

"If they believe in themselves, they should come forward and show us the tangible work they did in Kano. Instead, they exhausted the treasury to the extent that Kano was left indebted to banks," Yusuf stated.

Despite the challenging inheritance, the governor's administration has successfully reversed the situation, with billions of naira now available in government accounts.

This turnaround is attributed to prudent resource management and blocking financial leakages.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that his administration prioritizes spending on the people, not leaders.

"We have sacrificed our own comfort to make sure Kano's money is spent on the people, not on leaders. That is our guiding principle and will not compromise it," he said.

The governor also highlighted the state's improved performance in the 2025 NECO SSCE examinations, crediting his administration's investments in education.

He assured that his government would continue to prioritize education, healthcare, and infrastructure development while maintaining transparency and accountability.

The governor's administration has made significant strides in addressing pension liabilities, with over ₦21 billion cleared out of the ₦48.6 billion debt inherited from previous administrations.

This move has brought relief to pensioners who suffered irregular payments under the previous government.

Governor Yusuf's commitment to transparency and accountability is evident in his administration's efforts to rebuild the state's finances and invest in critical sectors, setting a new standard for governance in Kano State.
