The Registrar of NBAIS Prof Yahuza Sulaiman Iman says the institution is one of the legacies of the late Premier of Northern Nigeria Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna in 1969.
Prof Yahuza Sulaiman Imam made the assertion while discussing with newsmen in Kaduna.
He noted that the institution was an old one and not a recent creation as Nigerians often assumed.
The Registrar explained that the institution operated as a department at the Institute of education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, from 1969 to 2016.
He asserted that in 2011 the National Council on Education gave NBAIS full autonomy and it became a national examination and regulatory body.
Prof. Imam explained that the institution has over 1200 affiliated centres, about 500,000 registered candidates and over 200 programs.

He noted that it conducts nationally recognized examination  in Senior Arabic and Islamic Secondary School Certificates, Quranic Studies(Tahfeez) and the Science Curriculum.
The registrar added that NBAIS has integrated traditional islamic learning into the country's formal education stem.
