From Ibrahim Muhammad

The Kano State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Breakthrough Action Nigeria, has organized a 3-Day Message Development Workshop on Diphtheria and Cholera.

This initiative aims to create clear, accurate, and culturally appropriate messages to combat the spread of these diseases.

According to Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, the state Commissioner for Health, public health threats like cholera and diphtheria pose significant risks to communities, especially during outbreaks.

He emphasized the need for realistic messages that empower communities to take preventive actions.

The workshop's primary objective is to develop standardized communication messages on cholera and diphtheria prevention, symptoms, and treatment.

These messages will resonate with different communities across the state and debunk myths and misconceptions surrounding these diseases.

Dr. Yusuf stressed that health is a collective responsibility, involving health workers, traditional leaders, community-based organizations, and the media.

He believes that crafting effective messages will guide behavior, foster trust in health interventions, and ultimately save lives.

The State Lead of Breakthrough Action Nigeria, Ahmad Muazu, highlighted the importance of accurate information in combating these diseases.

In addition to the workshop, the Kano State Government has also inaugurated school health clubs. Dr. Yusuf explained that schools are the foundation of a healthier future, and integrating health education into secondary school activities invests in the next generation.

These clubs will promote health behavior, raise awareness about communicable and non-communicable diseases, and foster a culture of health consciousness among young people.

By building resilient communities equipped to prevent and manage health challenges, Kano State is taking proactive steps towards combating diphtheria and cholera.

Dr. Yusuf commended Breakthrough Action Nigeria for their resourceful support and commitment to advancing public health in Kano State.
