NDLEA Arrests Wanted Drug Baron In Lagos Over N1.4b Seized Illicit Drugs

After 17 years of evading law enforcement, Ogbonnaya Kevin Jeff, a 59-year-old alleged drug baron, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Lagos. The arrest was made possible by an Interpol red notice and intelligence from the National Intelligence Service of South Korea ¹ ².

According to Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Ogbonnaya's arrest is a significant breakthrough in the agency's efforts to dismantle drug trafficking syndicates operating in Nigeria.

Marwa revealed that Ogbonnaya had been under NDLEA investigation prior to his arrest and that comprehensive intelligence had been gathered on his activities.

Ogbonnaya's operations were not limited to Nigeria; he was an international trafficker with connections in Cameroon, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Liberia, and other East and Southern African countries.

He had recruited young Nigerians as couriers to smuggle illicit substances into South Korea and had laundered drug proceeds through the importation of electronics and other goods.

The NDLEA boss stated that Ogbonnaya's arrest was an affirmation of the agency's commitment to ensuring that Nigeria does not serve as a base for international drug trafficking operations.

Marwa assured that the NDLEA would continue its relentless fight against illicit drug networks and their financiers, safeguarding public health and national security.

During the arrest, operatives recovered multiple Nigerian international passports, Korean visas, and illicit substances from Ogbonnaya's residence.

Two arrest warrants had been issued against him by the Seoul Central District Court in January and June 2024, charging him with importing narcotic drugs into South Korea.

The NDLEA's efforts have resulted in the disruption of Ogbonnaya's illicit operations, and his arrest marks a significant milestone in the agency's fight against drug trafficking.
