The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) held its national conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where elections for new national officers to lead the association were conducted.
At the end of the conference, Barrister Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya, SAN, from Lagos State was elected as the first female President of the association, alongside other elected officials.
Speaking to journalists after returning from the conference, former Chairman of the NBA Kano Branch, Ungogo Chapter, and one of the organizers of the conference, Barrister Ahmad Abubakar Gwadabe, confirmed that the conference was attended by senior and junior lawyers, both male and female, from across the country, as well as legal stakeholders and top government officials.
Barrister Ahmad Gwadabe said the conference deliberated on several important issues, including those that will move the nation forward and advance the NBA.
The former Chairman of the Ungogo branch said the newly elected President has come with good intentions and laudable visions that will move the association forward, and that she will build on the legacies of past leaders.
Gwadabe said the major focus of the new leadership now is the welfare and well-being of lawyers across the country.
Barrister Ahmad Abubakar said the legal profession is built on truth and trust between a lawyer and his client, and that there is a code of conduct guiding lawyers, and anyone who violates the law will face disciplinary action.
Barrister Gwadabe called on the newly elected leaders to be God-fearing in discharging the responsibilities entrusted to them without any selfish interest.
